Forgetting First
Oct 08, 2024From a young age, we’re taught to aim high.
Be the best. Top the class. Win the race.
It’s motivating, but it’s also a trap.
Chasing “the best” is a game you can't win for long. For you to be number one, everyone else has to lose. All victories are temporary. And someone faster, smarter, or more skilful eventually comes along.
A better goal? Instead of trying to be the best, try to be your best.
Imagine a small-town baker. She’s not looking for fame or awards. She just wants to bake the best bread her hands can make. Her customers don’t care if she’s world-famous. They care about the warmth of her bread, the perfection of her cinnamon rolls and how her cake lights up their child’s birthday party. She’s thriving. Not because she’s outperforming others, but because she’s delivering her best work, consistently.
The game completely changes when you stop measuring yourself against others.
Forget about first. The real competition lies within yourself.
That’s a game you can keep winning.
