Conflicting Words Of Wisdom
Jan 31, 2023Proverbs are nuggets of truth wrapped up in concise, pithy word packages. Ideas like “look before you leap” and “opposites attract”.
They capture age-old wisdom and are meant to be accepted as universal truths. But many are in conflict with one another.
"He who hesitates is lost" says move fast. But "look before you leap" advises caution and planning. Should you act quickly or take a slow, measured response? Both. You see, it depends.
In high-stakes situations, it's wise to "look before you leap". You should consider all options and potential consequences. But in rapidly changing environments, delay could lead to missed opportunities, so "he who hesitates is lost" may be better advice.
Consider these contradictory proverbs:
- Great minds think alike... Fools seldom differ.
- Absence makes the heart grow fonder... Out of sight, out of mind.
- Opposites attract… Birds of a feather flock together.
There will always be conflicting words of wisdom because there are no "right" decisions. It's up to us to assess each situation and choose a path.
Spend less time worrying about whether you made the right decision and more time making that decision turn out right.
Whatever happens, there'll be a proverb to explain why.
